FAQ

Can I add lights to my existing system?
In most circumstances the answer is yes. However, that all depends on the power of the landscape lighting transformer that you already have installed. Every transformer is rated for a certain amount of wattage and each landscape light is rated for a certain amount of wattage. If your wattage consumption surpasses the wattage production of your transformer this is no good and can cause problems or may not work at all. Besides that, your lights may be using older halogen bulbs that are consuming more wattage than equivalent LED bulbs would. So it is possible that you could replace your halogen bulbs with LED bulbs and then allow yourself more wattage to work with to add additional lights. However, it is ideal to not max out your wattage at 100% but to aim for staying below 80% load. So the answer is, if your system can be worked in such a way that it has extra available wattage then you can definitely add more lights, whether that be by changing from halogen bulbs to LED bulbs or upgrading or adding an additional transformer.
What are the best type of lights to install?

In my experience, any quality landscape light that is properly sealed and can receive a bulb is ideal. When an integrated LED landscape lighting fixture stops working, you have few options but to replace the whole fixture, and I have seen them not last very long before. However, when a bulb goes out, you can simply replace it with a new one whether it’s LED or not.

What kind of landscape lighting systems do you work on?

I work on systems that have a transformer with a factory-installed plug.

Why is bi-annual maintenance important?

As high quality as landscape lights have become over the year with all of their various waterproofing features and hard exterior shells they’re still subject to the elements. Regular bi-annual cleaning of fixtures and changing of bulbs as needed is very good for your landscape lighting system. It’s important to clean and check the condition of your fixtures semi-regularly. Fixtures may have become damaged due to yard maintenance, branches falling, wind events, and any other number of reasons. It’s important to inspect for no loose, corroded, or broken connections as these could cause issues for the rest of your system. While having bulbs out on your system for an extended period of time is also not good for the rest of your system, as landscape lights like to stay within a certain range of voltage around 12 volts, and having multiple bulbs out could cause an overage of voltage to the remaining lights on the circuit.
